Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
